Comment:

 I don't personally like this approach as it gives the user no option of
 deciding which test harness they want to run (there are good reasons why
 automake is moving away from the serial test harness). But I don't live
 with the consequences of this as much as other people who seem to prefer
 this mechanism, so I am happy to commit it. Merged and closed.
