Well, whatever it was it went away when I built a RPM based on newer
source code releases (I should have checked that in the first place, I
know...)

Smoothwall is available for free at http://www.smoothwall.org/, I have
not tried it out myself but since it uses dhcpcd the problem should be
reproducable in most Linux-based systems. But since the bug seems to be
fixed in newer releases it should not be that much of an issue.
