Hi,
I just wanted to bring to seasoned DHCP hackers a note that the new DHCP
servers being developed by ISC have reached 0.9 beta1 stage.
If you're a DHCP hacker, you may want to take a look at Kea, which is a
new DHCP implementation being developed by Internet Systems Consortium,
Inc. that features fully functional DHCPv4, DHCPv6 server and Dynamic
DNS daemon. Both DHCP servers support server discovery, address
assignment, renewal, rebinding and release. The DHCPv6 server supports
prefix delegation. Both servers support DNS Update mechanism, using
stand-alone DDNS daemon, which is part of the release.
Kea is able to store leases in CSV files, in MySQL and PostgreSQL
databases or even run in memory-only mode if you need extra performance.
Its DDNS module does support the following TSIG digests: HMAC-MD5,
HMAC-SHA1, HMAC-SHA224, HMAC-SHA256, HMAC-SHA384 and HMAC-SHA512.
Supported platforms are Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD. The code
should also work on Mac OS X, but it was not tested.
Kea comes in with extensive documentation, addressed both at sysadmins
(Kea Administrator Reference Manual) and at developers and contributors
(Kea Developer's Guide).
Kea is developed in a more public manner than other ISC projects. Git
repository (with development branches and unreleased code), ticket
system, mailing lists, reviews, and jabber chatroom are all public.
Link to Kea website: http://kea.isc.org.
Contributions (patches, test reports, bug reports, developer time,
money, etc.) are more than welcome.
Cheers,
Tomek Mrugalski
Kea lead developer
