I don't know how useful this might be, but from my syslog:
 dhclient: receive_packet failed on eth0: Network is down

Bad cable? Flaky ethernet card? The ZenWalk distro recognized the nic and
installed the 'Tulip' driver, the card appears to be a 100MB SMC PCMIA(?).
