Oh, absolutely.   But when you're talking about things that don't  
exist yet, assuming that they have (or lack) certain characteristics  
is just speculation.   My experience has been that when new stuff  
comes out, we figure out how to make it work.   For devices like that,  
there's no particular reason why the DUID shouldn't be expressed in  
bar code on the side of the package.

There is one good reason to anticipate devices like this, though.   It  
might be a good idea to write up a BCP document that gives guidance to  
the vendor on (a) how to implement DUID on such a device and (b) what  
to put on the packaging to make your life easier.   There's never a  
guarantee that the vendor will read the BCP RFC, but it's worth a shot.
