I've just tried this on my laptop (10.6) and another machine running 10.5

10.6, I got :

simons-macbookpro:~ simon$ hostname
simons-macbookpro.thehobsons.co.uk
simons-macbookpro:~ simon$ host simons-macbookpro
Host simons-macbookpro not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
simons-macbookpro:~ simon$ host simons-macbookpro.thehobsons.co.uk
simons-macbookpro.thehobsons.co.uk has address 192.168.0.202

Resolve.conf contains :
domain thehobsons.co.uk
search local
nameserver 192.168.0.33

because I've put "local" in the search domains box of network setup
which is supposed to deal with the fact that Microsoft seems to
instruct admins to use ".local" for a non-routable domain even though
.local is reserved for Zeroconf.

Taking out the local I then get :
simons-macbookpro:~ simon$ host simons-macbookpro
simons-macbookpro.thehobsons.co.uk has address 192.168.0.202
simons-macbookpro:~ simon$ ping simons-macbookpro
