For me, a major attraction of the IEPG has been that its a lowish barrier to entry, has few formalisms, and if not consistently entertaining, its not boring for long. Some of the best ones looked like slideware done on a flight over. Some of the worst ones have been mine, true. 

The more formalisms you add, the more likely it is that it becomes less entertaining. 

if the only formalism you're adding is 6 weeks lead time, I can survive, but it feels like baby steps to boiling the frog. where next? 

btw, I realize that we're at opposite ends of a spectrum. You prefer a well organised activity and it probably has higher value for you, the better prepared people are.
