CURRENT 20020211: Dead on arrival?

Starting INN from the usual "su - news -c /var/news/bin/rc.news"
invocation now gets me no INNd.

innwatch and such start off as expected, but it looks like innd just
quietly exits.  Nothing is recorded in any logs, any where.  No errors to
console.  Nothing.

Running "su - news -c /var/news/bin/rc.news ; ps ax &" briefly displays
innd running, in state R, but a subsequent "ps ax" reveals it to be gone.

It happens so fast that I can't catch it when trying to attach it with
gdb.

Any hints?
