 There are long, historical reasons behind why INN previously hasn't
 generated good error messages about the history file that mostly boil down
 to the fact that dbz originally had some sort of independent existence
 outside of INN.  But the fact that it just sets EDOM if anything fails in
 dbzinit without any diagnostics has caused people no end of hair-pulling
 over the years.

 At some point, it should be improved.
