Just saw a new entry in news.notice:

Dec 27 11:16:39 myrddin innfeed[27954]: ME articles active 0 bytes 0
Dec 27 11:16:39 myrddin innfeed[27954]: ME articles total 1 bytes 0
 
which seems to correspond with the 0 length file mentioned below
