hanging inn on reader box

unfortunately (depending upon how you look at it), i had to do what i could
to eliminate the hangs, so i recompiled gcc-2.95.1 without the haifa
option, then recompiled yesterday's inn snapshot, and the server has so far
not hung on me. if it should do so, i'll certainly generate a core though.
