Whoops, someone is interpreting the ^.$ in the body as an end-of-file.
In case you missed it here it is again, space-indented:

This is on a y2k testmachine running in Sat Jan  1 01:53:09 MET 2000

 200 news.east.cis.philips.y2k InterNetNews NNRP server INN 2.2.1 25-Aug-1999 ready (posting ok).

So we see two different bugs.

1 y2k bug; if one chooses a date before the millennuim turnover newnews barfs.
2 newnews<enter> gives the syntax of newsgroups ?! Which is spelled
  wrong anyway; it should be newgroups, without the s.
