Just to get the facts straight:
Solaris 8 is released a few weeks ago.
$() is supported by Korn shell on Solaris, and as ksh is posix it
should also be supported on all unixes that claim to be posix
compatible. But as ksh also is commercial starting to use it in a
"portable" fashion probably would break things when running on Linux,
*BSD etc.

IMHO $() is kind of nice as it enhances readability and supports
nesting.

OTOH I totally agree with Russ, stick with sh and nothing will break.
