In reference to posts by Keith Lewis (8 Dec. 1999), Russ Allbery (10
Apr. 2000) and Bill Davidsen (12 Apr. 2000), has anyone taken a stab at
modifying the access stanza to obtain read/post lists from an external
source (i.e., LDAP)?

I have a simple "ckldap" that queries a specific LDAP schema, and a
generic schema-parameterized version is in the works.  However, it's the
determination of read/post lists from LDAP-based ACL's, not just
authentication, that is crucial.
