More efficient method to store overview database ?

Hello all,

is there any other way to store overview database than .overview.index
per
directory ? For example, the overview database consists of 8146
directories 
and only 6306 files on my site. There are a lot of directories in the
large directory tree with a single file in each of these - the best way
to 
eat filesystem space :-(.
