As soon as you have more than a few dozen packages and more than one
architecture and you're trying to maintain multiple versions, organizing
by package is the *only* feasible alternative in my experience.  I tend to
use /usr/local/package as the root point for them all, though.

But this is a major digression.

I think we're mostly in agreement with how INN should change to offer the
option, so we don't have to be in agreement on what we plan to do on our
own systems.  :)
