Backing up the archive

My current client has two news servers on different sites. One is running INN
1.7.2 and quite happy. The other is running 2.2.1 with CNFS and is having
trouble with articles expiring too soon - probably because he's only got 6 Gb of
buffers for it.
I've proposed they take that machine to 2.3 and buy some more disc. He says can
we revert to tradspool on 2.2.1, blowing away the CNFS buffers and copying the
comp.*, microsoft.*, sci.* hierarchies, with news.answers from the 1.7.2
archive.
Can we?
If we do, can we just create a tar archive of /var/news/spool/archive/comp etc.,
reload that and run makehistory? Or do we need anything else.
Also, how do I find statistics of the most commonly read groups, please?
Regards,
Dave Smith
