incoming.conf: patterns: & SMBUF

INN 2.2.2

It appears that if any line in incoming.conf is longer than 256 char
then an error occurs and that line is ignored.

I have verified this for
     patterns: ...
     #  ...

It appears that this is connected to SMBUF.

particularly for patterns: lines, this is annoying.
I did not find it documented anywhere.

Are there any solutions to this problem?

Just upping SMBUF does not look like a good idea
and it is not clear to me from a superficial examination what
could be changed to up the buffer size used when reading incoming.conf.
