Innd still crashing

Found the problem - errlog shows the following error(s):
Mon Jun 19 14:04:13 2000 innfeed: ME config: no usable value for 
backlog-directory

Thu Jun 22 09:57:35 2000 innfeed: ME config: no usable value for 
backlog-directory.

(Note: At this point I edited the inn.conf to point the backlog dir to 
/news/db/backlog and created the /db/backlog directory in the /news 
subtree)

Thu Jun 22 10:01:13 2000 innfeed: ME config: no usable value for 
backlog-directory.

Am I missing something?  Or is there a special way that this directory has 
to be created?
