expire only deletes articles stored on your spool. As those articles had
come in, INN was also writing a list of message IDs to send to your other
site. expire went through and deleted the actual articles, but it doesn't
know anything about backlogs (and in general shouldn't need to, since in
the normal case articles will be sent before they're expired). Side
effect of the spool and the backlogs being maintained by completely
separate parts of the news system.
