Unwanted newsgroup messages are logged (on my system, anyway) in 
~news/log/news.  scanlog parses this file to count up the newsgroups 
that were offered but rejected because the group wasn't in your 
active file (and number of articles and byte counts from individual 
feeders, etc.).
