Maybe you also want to have a look at 
ftp.uni-stuttgart.de:/pub/unix/comm/news/nid

This is Tobias Hennerich's NewsInDosen (NewsInCans) version of INN 1.7,
which was then ('97/'98) quite popular in Germany. Maybe it's interesting
for historic purposes to show solutions for the traditional
one-article-per-file bottleneck.
