Using files vs. partitions because of the OS (FreeBSD)
I have so many cycbuffs because they are small 4.x GB drives.

Interesting thought. However, in my case, the cycbuffs seem to have initialized fine and have filled with news. I just can't get any information via cnfsstat any longer - frustrating because cfnsstat gives some extremely useful info, basically letting me know if things are working properly.
