simple question: newsgroup rename

Obligatory: I looked through the FAQ and searched the mailing list but
haven't found much information.

I was wondering what the proper process for renaming a newsgroup on a
completely local standalone server was.  Just creating the new group,
copying the articles to the newsgroup and "rmgroup"ing the old group
doesn't seem like it would work well (history, message ids and such). 
Can anybody give me a pointer?  Thanks.
