Hmm, after some debugging, and makehistory core dumping, I think I got it:

$ ulimit -a
core file size (blocks)     unlimited
data seg size (kbytes)      -1572864
[..snip..]
virtual memory (kbytes)     -1507328

Looks like something went wrong with my new kernel...
