I had no more time to work on. I know it works on linux and Katsuhiro
Kondou reported it does not compile on solaris.
The autoconf changes are 100% untested and probably wrong (I copied them
straight from the original patch, but some parts are not needed anymore).
It should need only minor changes, but currently I can't work on it.
