Reminds me, I stumbled across the below in sendfile(2):

       Other  Unixes  often  implement  sendfile  with  different
       semantics  and  prototypes.  It  should  not  be  used  in
       portable programs.

And peeking around it seems that it definitely varies.  What fun.
