The check is actually a lot more simple-minded than that.
STABLE didn't think that Linux could ever do large files; CURRENT has a
more correct check (although not entirely correct -- the right thing to do
is to move to autoconf 2.52 and then use the built-in macro, but I haven't
had a chance to do that for CURRENT yet).
I've backported a fix to STABLE, so the next snapshots should know to try
large file support on Linux.
