Right, ideally one should write an Internet Draft specifying the NNTP
protocol extension so that we have something concrete to work from and use
as documentation. It shouldn't be too hard to do that based on the other
RFCs for using SASL with other protocols, but it's work that should be
done up-front.
Then we could publicize that on news.software.nntp and the nntp-extensions
list to solicit feedback, and after the NNTP working group finishes
current business, it could be put forward for standards-track RFC status
at the same time as we progress on implementation.
