Except for how long it takes to calculate MD5 and compare 16 bytes,
they are good.  They are indeed unique.  One advantage they may
have over anything computed locally is that they are portable
from system to system.

I don't care for the tradspool indexing of newsgroup names. If
you lose that index file which maps names to numbers, it is
very difficult to recover.
