Journaling filesystems

I finally figured out why this power outage was so much more painful than 
previous ones -- with Russ's new overview stuff I expected it to be much 
less trouble.

We're now running with journaling filesystems.  As a result, it seems that 
no matter how much msync'ing we do, nothing truly gets written except on a 
periodic basis (say, every 30 seconds).  I don't even know if closing the 
file guarantees that it will be written.

Any ideas on what to do about this?  It seems like a major step backwards 
for us, even if it does guarantee the integrity of the filesystem.
