Ah, perceptive.  (Is there any useful information in errno that would make 
that error message more informative?)

An alternative is to keep control.cancel in a relatively small cycbuff so 
that it can never have enough articles to worry about.

That's very odd -- I'd expect the symlink error to occur in exactly the 
same cases, except with much lower frequency since it requires a 
crossposted.  Curious.
