Ok, I did the following:

I removed all of the files in articles/control.messages (there were many)
I removed group.index from the overview directory
I ran makehistory -b -e -F -I -O
makedbz, running this command, gave me many of these error messages:
Duplicate message-id "[4344C2CB63A72C5A869EC16E388A7EF8]" in history text
Duplicate message-id "[EC45065099897DFF2346B3C04E49350E]" in history text

Duplicate message-id "[B937C3FB8A9AEAEE53F246D9DAD01696]" in history text
I then started inn and did a ctlinnd renumber ""

I am still getting messages logged in my error log such as:

Jan 14 00:24:01 apatite.njit.edu innd: [ID 110972 news.error] tradspool:
could not open /export/news/spool/articles/rec/sport/basketball/pro/20429 File

Jan 14 00:27:08 apatite.njit.edu innd: [ID 492761 news.error] SERVER cant store
article: File exists

While other messages that I mentioned earlier have disapeared, I feel as
if I am back to the same problem. I'm lucky if the server stays up for a
day before throttling itself.

ideas, suggestions, solutions? Is my active file corrupted?

thanks,
