Note that the unless the current Perl and Pythons hooks are upgraded
to have the 'port' available this won't work work for Cornell's
sidecar driven needs ....
....  (ie we can't use these hooks because we need the port
      (   yet we have to use these hooks because they are the only
      (   way to get custom group patterns

Fortunately there is already agreement on adding 'port' support to the hooks
(Thanks Erik!)  so this issue will soon be moot ... but I just wanted to
get it into the record ....
