news.daily permission problems

ok i chown'd the /tmp/ contents to news and still get the same error. It
appears that news cant create files in that directory, however the directory
is owned by news. ls -l output:
drw-r--r-- 2 news news 4096 Jan 19 14:10 tmp
so im not sure why it cant write there?

Just chown to news. Perhaps you did run news.daily sometime
as root by accident? Is the user news able to create files in
/var/lib/news/tmp ?
