Sorry for the delay in responding.

If there's nothing in the logs, you're looking in the wrong logs or have 
configured syslog incorrectly.  Every connection should be logged in 
news.notice.

This is probably a readers.conf issue of some kind.  If you don't 
understand what users your readers.conf allows or disallows, you need to 
read the manpage again, and perhaps enable news.debug logging so you get 
more details of readers.conf being used.
