I'm increasingly convinced that we have a bug in inter-process message 
passing that results in nnrpd failing to log errors from authenticators 
correctly.  I bet that you have some error (probably with permissions) 
that should be giving you a nice message, but isn't.

If you run `ckpasswd -s` manually (using the -u and -p flags to test 
out your username and password), you may get an actual error.  Make 
sure you test by running it as the news user, and not as root.

I don't know what that line is -- but I don't think it's related to 
your authentication problem, so we'll set it aside for now.
