Excess Messages

Does Outlook Express keep reporting 24000 messages the second time
you access the newsgroup?

Could you try to telnet your news server and ask for:

GROUP news.software.nntp
211 516 149 3657 news.software.nntp

(with the name of a relevant newsgroup)
