Thanks! I've applied the patch to return 411s and had a more
consistent/usable user experience. I'm also seeing fewer "can't read:
Connection reset by peer" errors in news.notice, so I hope that's
better.
I agree that the readers should handle the 502 error better, but it
seems they tolerate (and even ask to unsubscribe) when offered the 411.
Because the wishlist enhancement is really now for functionality and
usability, not (just) paranoia, I hope its priority can get bumped. In
the meantime, the one-off patch seems to be working and I'll keep an eye
on things here.
