it pipelines communications to/from the whois server, which is why it's so
fast.  Unfortunately this isn't supported on the ripe whois server
(although there is a really ugly way of making it work).

I had a look at fixing the irrtoolset library to support this but it was
too messy - it would have required a fairly major restructuring of the
libirr code.
