Looking at the meson stuff (which I’m not an expert on, but I do know makefile and autoconf), it seems to me that using “cpp.run()” in a cross-build is extremely problematic, same as using AC_TRY_RUN() in configure.ac if one was attempting to write cross-build friendly projects.

Perhaps the target parameters for cross-builds should all be explicitly specified via arguments, whereas native-builds could attempt to do some detection… but the two should be clearly separated.
