64 bits vs 32

I note that nearly all of my x86 gear runs a 64 bit os. (the *only*
exception is io, actually, and that makes it a PITA. Of course all the
cerowrt boxes are mips, which is a REAL pita)
In part, why I had originally specified the lenovo laptops was because
they were 64 bit, and thus builds of various pieces of software I have
can be done on a 8 core 64 bit box and complete in minutes rather than
hours.
OK, so... this aspire one laptop I was just given by alistair is cute,
and has amd c-60 chips in it - but I was handed i386 ubuntu cds with
it.
The prospect of recompiling wireshark alone is daunting on such a puny
box, so... it is my hope it 'just works' 64 bit, so I can take my
existing builds and move them over.
But, perhaps I'm merely incompatible with isc's methods. I haven't run
a 32 bit OS in nearly 7 years, on purpose anyway....
Does anyone care if I make things 64 bit rather than 32 bit, by
default? When does isc use a 32 bit os? 64 bit?
