Multicast how?

I've been running pimd for months now. It's installed by default. Doesn't
work across interfaces (route).
Multicast as an idea is mostly dead.
If you can suggest a good test of pimd that is known to work and/or a known
working box with working sparse multicast, it would help.
An igmp proxy is available.
