domain.com.domain.com being looked up for local names?

This was done via nslookup on the machine that is the DNS server on the
commandline.
 ># nslookup obiwan.shokk.com

where obiwan.shokk.com is a 192.168.0.0 net machine behind the NAT server,
which is also the DNS server.

This machine is running Bind 8.2.1, so that's the nslookup I'm using. When
I do a ping from one of the NAT machines using this as the nameserver, the
request is only done once, making me think the nslookup is doing it. If it
is true that it doesn't always do it, what is it that tickles nslookup into
this behavior?
