nslookup / resolver behaviour, appending domains?

It's not named that "walks the search list in /etc/resolv.conf", it's
the resolver. The name server doesn't even (need to) look at that
file. Resolvers use resolv.conf to figure out what names, if any, to
append to the name being looked up before firing the query at a name
server. The name server just looks up whatever name was in the query
sent by the resolver. The name server doesn't tack on any domain name
the name that was in that query.
