nslookup / resolver behaviour, appending domains?

Not for applications using BIND's resolver library.

New applications that use DNScache's resolver library will skip the
extra lookups by default for names with dots:

   http://cr.yp.to/dnscache/qualify.html

All aspects of name qualification, including this behavior, are
configurable by the system administrator and by shell users.
