This scenario matches my situation very well!

I think.

"cuname.creighton.edu" is "primary" (er.."master") for "creighton.edu"
and "secondary" (umm..."slave") for the delegated subdomain that failed.

The primary for the failed subdomain ingested its hard-drive and was dead
for some length of time--and when rebuilt denied zone transfers--ergo, when
the secondary zone timed out "cuname" threw everything away including the
delegating NS records.

I think that fits.
