Problems Compiling 8.2.2 for HPUX10.20/11

I get the following:

/usr/local/bin/gcc -Ae -z  -g -Wl,+vnocompatwarnings 
-I../../port/hpux10/include -I../../include -c noop.c
*Initialization*:1: missing token-sequence in `#assert'
make[2]: *** [noop.o] Error 1

Can anyone suggest how to get around this?  I checked the archives
and this problem has been encountered before but no solutions were
given.
