My personal preference is the dnstrace tool that comes as part of the
DNScache package (http://cr.yp.to/dnscache/tools.html).
It follows every possible delegation path when resolving so is fantastic
for locating the source of intermittant problems like those caused by
lame delegations in the parent zone of one of your slave nameservers,
for instance.
