Hate to tell you this, but this is like asking "how much sunshine to
you get?". I live in New Mexico and get lots. My employeers
headquarters in in Washington state, and they receive MUCH less.

So, the answer is "it depends".

Now, one of the servers that I maintain is the companies Internet name
server, but it is queried very little, ~30 queries/minute. No one in
the corporation uses this server in their resolver. Other servers
that I manage receive 1-10 queries/sec, because people identify
them in their resolver.

I had a name server that was being clobbered with 100 queries/sec by a
popular web server, and although busy, it functioned quite well.

In http://www.dns.net/dnsrd/stats.html, there is old information about
one of the root name servers. It was being hit with around 400
queries/sec. I would strongly suspect that many/most DNS servers could
receive even more.

In RFC2010, "Operational Criteria for Root Name Servers", there is a
statement that these servers must be able to handle "1200 UDP
transactions per second" and 2000 is highly desirable. I am assuming
that a "UDP transaction per second" can be translated into "DNS query
per second".
